Summing it all up
Summing up the demerit points, we get the following:

  • Firebird: 1 + 1 + 2 = 4 points.
  • MySQL: 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 12 points.
  • PostgreSQL: 3 points.
Remember: the fewer points, the better. And if you ask me (a person with a wicked taste), I'd prefer... MySQL! It has the most interesting bugs and it's the leader, which makes it a perfect choice for analysis!

Firebird and PostgreSQL are trickier. On the one hand, even a one-point margin counts; on the other hand, it's quite a small difference, especially because that point was given for a V768 warning of the medium-certainty level... But then again, the codebase of PostgreSQL is way larger, yet it issued four hundred warnings at its automatically generated code...

Anyway, to figure out which of the two projects, Firebird or PostgreSQL, is better, we'd have to do a more thorough comparison. For now, I put them on one podium place so no one is offended. Maybe one day we'll compare them again more carefully, but it will be quite a different story...

So, the code-quality rankings are as follows:

  • 1 place - Firebird and PostgreSQL.
  • 2 place - MySQL.

Firebird and Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Windows 10 is well known for encouraging a love/hate relationship with its users. From the beginning Microsoft implemented a policy of uninstalling users' software without their consent during installation or update of Windows 10. Many articles on the net discuss this, for example however, until now, Firebird seemed to be unaffected.


Not any more. Windows 10 Creators Edition (Build 1709), released in September 2017 seems to have added Firebird to its hit list of dangerous applications. This problem was first reported here.

How to make Firebird work 20% faster on Windows Server 2016 in less than 1 minute by IBSurgeon

More and more users upgrade to Windows Server 2016 from old versions, and some of them have noticed that Windows Server 2016 works slower than previous versions, even on the same hardware with the same database.

We have made several tests on Windows Server 2016 and Firebird, and found, among other things, the option, which dramatically influences the performance of the Windows Server 2016: the power plan.

By default, Windows 2016 has «Balanced» power plan, which automatically balances performance with energy consumption on capable hardware. Well, sounds not dangerous, but in fact, Balanced power plan at Windows Server 2016 greatly suppresses CPU performance and decrease the overall performance of the server.

It is possible to switch Power plan on the fly, no need to reboot. See the effect of enabling «High Performance» power plan on the server with Firebird database, which serves 70 connections:
